Doc Variables slow, how to update and use variables
Bert-Jan Kamp
Doc Variables is not really usable unless you have a lot of time. It is dead slow to add a variable (takes minutes for a simple text variable) and in addition the flow is unclear. Like how can you edit/change a text variable? How can I add it somewhere else in the document. These actions should be clear from the menu but are not.
There are nice features but most of the time but mostly we will use the simple text or drop-down.
For example, once you added a text doc variable you can use it once and then it is gone, nowhere to be found..
Jesse McCabe
All of these features are very simple and take no time at all once you understand the syntax. It is not meant to be controlled by the menu… that is only there to help you get started. Have you read the documentation and watched my videos? I am happy to help, but it might not be the right fit for you if you are looking for a “wizard” type of app.

Jesse McCabe One of the issues that Bert-Jan Kamp raises is the variable that 'is gone, nowhere to be found'. If he watches your video, he will discover that the default setting is to overwrite the document, rather than create a copy, which is what most of us use 99.99+ % of the time. Any chance that you could change the default to create a copy?
Jesse McCabe
Mark Glover if you go to user settings you can change the default to create a copy.
Jesse McCabe
Mark Glover I agree that the default should probably be to make a copy based on usage, but I’m worried that changing it now could affect some users. Maybe I should publish a poll.
Jesse McCabe
Or I set the setting it for new users only. (I’m just brainstorming with myself at this point)
Mark Glover
Jesse McCabe Yes. I suggest that it be the default OOTB.
